ABOUT FARNHAM COMMUNITY FARM

Grown for the community, with the community

Farnham Community Farm is a not-for-profit, community-led farm where people come together to grow food, share skills, and reconnect with nature.

We farm on approximately 1.5 acres of land in Runfold, just outside of Farnham.

As well as our veg fields we have three polytunnels which are crucial for providing food throughtout the year.

We grow over a hundered different vegetables in a regenerative way that supports biodiveristy and healthy soil.

The veg is harvested weekly for the veg bag scheme, so when you are signing up for a bag - you’re not just buying vegetables, you are becoming part of the farm.

OUR FARM

Founded in 2008, Farnham Community Farm is a local vegetable growing project, started by a group of people who felt there was a need for fresh, local produce, and a healthy attitude towards the production behind it.

We are a Community Supported Agriculture scheme, which means we are a partnership between growers and consumers. Committing to buy a share of our harvest, allows our members feel connected to where their food comes from, and supporting a small-scale local producer who farms with care for the environment and the community.

OUR TEAM

FCF is run co-operatively - there is no farm manager, decisions are made jointly between the growers, the Board and the members.

On the farm most days you’ll meet Cris, Ellen and Teti, who grow the veg and manage the day-to-day running. You can also see our part-time growers Tommy on Tuesdays and Hazel on Thursdays and Fridays.

Ellen has taken a role of a Volunteer Co-ordinator and Teti is the Farm Admin. Our Board is currently made up of 5 members - Kerstin, Sarah, Tash, Adam, Gillie and Fleur. We are always on the lookout for new Board members if you have a skill you’d like to lend to the team, or you’re just an enthusiastic member of the local community!

OUR HISTORY

What began as a small, volunteer-led project has grown into a thriving community farm — still powered by people, and still rooted in the belief that food should be local, sustainable, and shared.

What began as a small, volunteer-led project has grown into a thriving community farm — still powered by people, and still rooted in the belief that food should be local, sustainable, and shared.

Farnham Community Farm began in 2008, when a group of local people came together to tackle a simple problem: despite being surrounded by farmland, very little food was being grown locally.

It started with a meeting at Farnham Maltings, where a Farnham resident brought together others interested in growing local produce. From that moment, a community formed - and Farnham Community Farm (formerly known as Farnham Local Food) was born.

In the early days, vegetables were grown on a small plot behind a gardener’s house, before moving to a larger site off St George’s Road in Runfold. A second, smaller site in Dippenhall was developed at the same time.

The project steadily grew, acquiring polytunnels, a yurt, and even a cob oven. Members played a hands-on role, harvesting their shares on Saturday mornings, come rain or sunshine.

As the farm developed, it expanded from a seasonal project into a year-round veg bag scheme, supplementing with British organic produce when needed.

When the time came to leave St George’s Rd, the farm fully moved to its current site at West Farm.

We are lucky enough to have a pizza oven for open days and socials, and in 2021 we put up a beautiful new yurt as a central hub for the farm. As well as keeping us warm and cosy in the colder months, this can be used as an educational space where small groups of people come together to learn more about the different aspects of growing food.

We are grateful to Farnham Town Council, the Community Foundation for Surrey, Farnham Institute, Farnham Weyside Rotary Club and The National Lottery’s 25th Anniversary Awards for making the yurt a reality.

We are also grateful to ServiceNow Community Improvement Fund for funding solar panels that are now powering our yurt, irrigation system and fridges.

After a few years of organising a Plant Fayre, it has scaled up to what is now the Wellbeing & Sustainability Festival, annually held in Gostrey Meadow and organised in partnership with Farnham Town Council.

The event now brings together over 3000 people and 40+ local businesses and charities for a day of education, live music, food, local produce, craft, wellbeing, demonstrations and activities to celebrate local and sustainable.
